Legislative Program

Since its founding was back in the 1860s, the Grange has been involved in several non-partisan political activities.  The initiative and the referendum are due to Grange efforts, as well as the blanket primary.  When the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional, the Washington State Grange put forward I872, which restores the right of the voter to pick the person, not the party.

More specific to this Grange, in the mid-1990s, we fought to preserve the land at the bottom of the Sammamish Valley from becoming soccer fields.  As a result, those lands next to the Sammamish River Trail are now agricultural lands, allowing small farmers to thrive.

Legislative matters are the most important part of the Washington State Grange—they hire a lobbyist to advance ideas presented in resolutions presented by local Granges.  You may see the legislative program of the Washington State Grange here.  If you are curious about a position the State Grange holds on an issue, please check out the Washington State Grange Legislative Handbook
